MOTAT is New Zealand’s largest transport and technology museum and is home to some of the world’s most unique examples of historical innovations in kiwi transport and technology. We’re looking for a Conservation Technician who demonstrates initiative, skill and care to join the team. Reporting to the Senior Conservation Technician, the position’s main responsibilities are to carry out cleaning tasks following best professional conservation practice in a safe and secure manner and supporting programs and procedures for the long-term preservation of the museum’s collections.

This is a part-time role working 20 hours per week from Monday to Friday.

 

Key responsibilities in this role include:

  • Assisting the Senior Conservation Technician to carry out the cleaning program of collections on display and in storage across our 3 sites
  • Assessing surface conditions of collections and then planning cleaning approaches under the guidance of the Senior Conservation Technician and/or Conservation Manager.
  • Participating in disaster planning plus carry out salvage of collections objects in the event of an emergency.

 

Our ideal candidates for this role will have:

  • A relevant conservation qualification or working towards one or, 2 years’ demonstrable experience working under a Conservator in a museum or professional setting
  • Demonstrated experience carrying out IPM or environmental monitoring of collections
  • Experience with hazardous collections and emergency salvage of collections
  • Physically fit with good manual dexterity, stamina and patience
  • An Approved Chemical Handler Certification or a commitment to obtain it 

 

A full licence is desirable to get across our 3 sites, however, you will mostly be based at our main site on Great North Road, Western Springs or at the offsite storage facility in Penrose. Competency using Excel and Word and experience with Vernon CMS or a similar system is essential.
